If all things happen for a reason, what reason is there for breaking your leg? I guess if you are Doyle Brunson, it could be so that you will go on to be a poker superstar. Brunson, who was born in 1933 in Texas, has had a 50+ year career playing cards and his name has become synonymous with poker. Brunson had caught the attention of the NBA's Minneapolis Lakers (now the Los Angeles Lakers.) Sadly, his leg was shattered in two places by falling sheetrock while it was being unloaded at a factory. He spent two years in a cast and realized he probably needed a new career interest. He continued his education, earning his B. A and M. A. Degrees. Additionally, Brunson started his career in poker with the Texas Rounders. This group was basically a group of men who made the circuit of high stakes poker games throughout Texas. In the 1950s and 1960s, this band of players became famous (or some would say infamous.) In fact, one TV documentary states of them that they "cleaned Texas dry." Leaving the smoky backroom poker tables behind, Doyle set out to Las Vegas. It was here that his poker skills were parlayed into millions of dollars in winnings and multiple championships. Starting with his first World Series of Poker (WSOP) bracelet in 1975 which netted him $230,000, Brunson has gone on to win nine other bracelets, his latest coming in 2005. In addition to his earnings playing poker, Brunson generates huge profits from sales of his book about Texas Hold 'Em. Originally available in 1978, this book still sells nearly 14,000 copies each month. Doyle Brunson is now over 67 years old and still plays poker regularly. His son and daughter have joined him at some recent events. His son, Todd, won a 2005 WSOP bracelet playing in an Omaha Hi-Lo tournament.
